Dear Wesgreen Community,

School started on a promising note, with all students receiving their books, syllabus, curriculum and academic calendar for 2004-2005. We have introduced Progress Reports every thirty-five days and this would serve as an indicator to parents about the performance and progress of their children. Tremendous importance will be given to academic excellence and discipline since it is our aim to not only impact knowledge and facts, but also instill values and help our students to believe in themselves. To this end we hope to have the full support of our parents.

Senior Students from Grades 10 and 11 were enlightened about the procedures of universities in the United Kingdom. Speakers from seven British universities were invited to Wesgreen to counsel our students on the respective requirements for admissions to their universities. Presentations were made, catalogues were distributed and questions were answered. This is an ongoing event which was initiated last year and will continue throughout the year for the benefit of our students. This will assist them, greatly, in finding universities and choices that are available. Students will also be taken to local universities as part of the School’s Counseling Programme.

The Head Boy, Head Girl and their Deputies for the secondary sections have been selected. The Head Girl being Narges Hassan and her Deputy Nadia Rashid. The Head Boy is Hesham Ghandour and his Deputy is Abdul Ahad, in the Secondary Sections. In the Primary Section, the Head Girl is Leen Al Kassab and her Deputy is Harini Kannangara. The Head Boy is Haroon Khan and his Deputy is Khalid Al Qassimi.

Students were introduced to the Democratic process, listening to campaign speeches, sign board slogans, the never ending promises that are an integral part of election campaigns. The new Student Council Members have all been put in place on each campus. A short induction ceremony was witnessed by parents, staff and students. Although this is only the second year since Wesgreen School has initiated this practice, I trust that it will become a tradition for our students, for years to come.

The election results for the Boys and Girls Section for Chair and Vice Chair from Grade 10 for the various school societies, namely the Sports Club, Debate/Drama Club, Literacy Club, Einstein Club and Helpers Club can be found in the respective sections for the Boys/Girls in this magazine.

After school activities have commenced, for all students from grades 3 onwards. It goes without saying that those students who stay back after school, for fun or Homework Help Nights, appear to be that much more a part of school. I trust that every parent will at least try to encourage their child to stay back and get involved in school activities. Homework Help Nights are for students who have been identified for extra help in certain subjects, and our students and teaching staff stay back to assist them. We hope that this will lead to parents abandoning the practice of tuitions, or completing the homework for their child. Remember that at Wesgreen our curriculum encompasses various aspects of education. This includes our students being exposed to numerous speakers, hands on activities, term projects, classroom and homework – with special emphasis on presentation and educational trips.

It is our belief that our students are ambassadors of Wesgreen School, and that they reflect our school through their work and actions. Participation in these activities is a privilege not a right. This privilege will only go to those students who demonstrate the ability to cooperate and whose purpose it is to learn.

On a final note, I would like to advise every student of Wesgreen to make the most of all the services and programs that are offered. Remember, that time and opportunities lost can never be regained and what you do today will have an impact on your future.

Sand & Stone - A lesson to share:

A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: “TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE”.

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: “TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE”.

The friend who had slapped and saved his friend asked him, “After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone. Why?” The other friend replied: “When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it.”

LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN STONE.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but an entire life to forget them.
