Give your child a healthy breakfast with some complex carbohydrates e.g.. Cereal, fruit, milk, toast (bananas are great).
Ensure your child has ample sleep. As a society we are more sleep deprived than ever before, and tired brains do not function well.
Encourage your child to drink plenty of water. Sipping regularly through the day is more effective than gulping at widely spaced intervals. Our brains need water to function. Often when we feel lethargic and dull, we are simply dehydrated. Salty foods also encourage dehydration.
Encourage physical activity. One of the best times to tackle a mental challenge is about 20 minutes after strenuous physical activity.
Cross lateral body movements (brain gym) encourage the left and right brain to work together.
Give your child ‘downtime’. Downtime allows slow thinking (when your brain is not distracted by immediate concerns it makes valuable connections – the ‘aha’ moments). ‘Downtime” also encourages children to play creatively. Children who have fully organized days will say ‘I’m bored’ as soon as they are left to their own devices because they are not given the opportunities to be creative in their play.
Reduce stressful situations. Our brains “freeze” when they are stressed. Show your child how to breathe deeply.
Let your child know that it’s ok to make mistakes. Believing that mistakes should be avoided at all costs reduces a child’s willingness to attempt something new, and also increase stress.
Be aware of your own, and your child’s preferred learning styles, visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Provide learning opportunities which enable your child to take in new information easily (e.g. Kinesthetic learners need movement and/or something to fiddle with).
Boys, girls, brothers and sisters are different. Take these differences into account and accept each child as an individual, with their own strengths and personalities. Be aware of your child’s multiple intelligences. Provide opportunities to develop them all and especially those which are strengths for your child. Our world needs great designers, plumbers and musicians as well as accountants, lawyers and doctors!
