Parking...
An important reminder for all three building parking lots. Little children are moving around in the parking lots, and we find some cars speeding. Remember, that we would like all the children to reach safely. Do ensure that you follow the directions of those assisting in the parking lots, for everyone's safety. For the Senior Buildings—a special reminder—no blowing horns; have your child meet you in a designated area.

Mark your Calendars for October 2005

For the Holy Month of Ramadan the following timings will be observed fromTuesday, October 4 th to Wednesday, November 2 nd, 2005.

The timings are as follows: Nursery, KG 1 and KG 2 8am – 12:20pm – Saturday to Tuesday, 8am - Noon - on Wednesday.

Grades 1 – 4 8am– 1:55pm – Saturday to Tuesday 8am - 1:05pm – on Wednesday

Grades 5 – 12 7:45am – 2:05pm – Saturday to Tuesday, 7:45am – 1:15pm – on Wednesday

Do ensure that your children are collected on time since all the three school buildings will close at 2:30pm sharp.

Open House...

The first Open House at Wesgreen took place on September 14th. It was indeed a pleasure to welcome 78% of the parent population to the campuses. I think that having our parents meet the teaching faculty was the best thing that we could have implemented from the start of the year. The first point of contact for your child at school is the class teacher, followed by teaching specialists, department heads, building heads and then the deputy headmaster or headmaster. By working in this order it will put problems or suggestions in perspective, and allow for those that are responsible for a particular area to carry out their responsibilities to a greater degree. I have got to know many parents, just from seeing them drop and pick their children, or when they come to meet teachers. Remember that we are only a phone call away, so if you would like to come in to discuss your child’s progress or have any concerns do call the building receptionist to make an appointment, you do not have to wait until a Parent Teacher Meeting is scheduled.

Testing...Projects...Journals…..

By now you must have received the information concerning Projects, Testing and Journals—which was given to all secondary section students (The same is available on the school website—in Students Corner). Do ensure that you review the same as it will be very important when calculating student marks. A reminder that all students in grades 5 to 11 must be completing a journal for all languages; Arabic, English, French or Urdu. The journal is due weekly and is in addition to any homework that has been given. The journals are something for the students to enhance their language skills and ensure that they are reading outside current events in these languages. Projects are to be hand written and instructions followed to the letter. Tests will be ongoing; no more than three per week excluding: Arabic & English Language, no more than two on a day, with a minimum of five days notice. Quizzes can be taken at any time, and are unannounced.

If you are having any problems or have any questions regarding your child's education – in a specific area the above mentioned can be contacted as they are directly responsible for a curriculum area. A particular teacher may not be listed, but the team leader of the section should be contacted, with a copy to the respected head of the building. Don’t forget that we also use the old fashioned method of the school diary—which is means of daily communication to your child's teachers.

Brain Friendly Learning, How You Can Help Your Child... Learn

Give your child a healthy breakfast with some complex carbohydrates e.g.. Cereal, fruit, milk, toast (bananas are great).

Ensure your child has ample sleep. As a society we are more sleep deprived than ever before, and tired brains do not function well.

Encourage your child to drink plenty of water. Sipping regularly through the day is more effective than gulping at widely spaced intervals. Our brains need water to function. Often when we feel lethargic and dull, we are simply dehydrated. Salty foods also encourage dehydration.

Encourage physical activity. One of the best times to tackle a mental challenge is about 20 minutes after strenuous physical activity.

Cross lateral body movements (brain gym) encourage the left and right brain to work together.

Give your child ‘downtime’. Downtime allows slow thinking (when your brain is not distracted by immediate concerns it makes valuable connections – the ‘aha’ moments). ‘Downtime” also encourages children to play creatively. Children who have fully organized days will say ‘I’m bored’ as soon as they are left to their own devices because they are not given the opportunities to be creative in their play.

Reduce stressful situations. Our brains “freeze” when they are stressed. Show your child how to breathe deeply.

Let your child know that it’s ok to make mistakes. Believing that mistakes should be avoided at all costs reduces a child’s willingness to attempt something new, and also increase stress.

Be aware of your own, and your child’s preferred learning styles, visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Provide learning opportunities which enable your child to take in new information easily (e.g. Kinesthetic learners need movement and/or something to fiddle with).

Boys, girls, brothers and sisters are different. Take these differences into account and accept each child as an individual, with their own strengths and personalities. Be aware of your child’s multiple intelligences. Provide opportunities to develop them all and especially those which are strengths for your child. Our world needs great designers, plumbers and musicians as well as accountants, lawyers and doctors!

School bags  

There is a growing concern these days that students are carrying way too much weight on their backs. If school bags are not used properly, muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the back can be strained. With over 30% of school aged children reporting that they experience frequent backaches and pains it is important to choose and use a back pack properly. Ideally, a school bag would have several compartments as this helps distribute the weight better. Also, instead of carrying everything one owns in the schoolbag, try packing the bag according to the timetable. Roller Bags will not be allowed this academic year. This is in the interest of the students’ safety.

Confiscated items:

Mobile telephones, unsuitable reading material, video games, jewelry will be confiscated and returned on the last day of the academic year.

Volunteers Need
Looking for parents that have extra time to assist at school again this year. If you are interested to extend a helping hand please call reception, and we will send a form to be completed.

Extra help may include; assisting with House activities, supervising outings, helping with school programs and a reading program with our young students.

Parent volunteers will provide a rich supplement to our co-curricular activities, and I would encourage parents to become involved as much as they can be.
