 October 2004

October 2004 has been a very busy month for all at Wesgreen; from the students to the staff everyone was involved in our Ramadan Charity Drive, spearheaded by the Helper’s Society. This year we have started a Helper’s Society in the Primary Section as well, and it is indeed a pleasure to see our young ones taking such an interest in humanitarian causes. Students and families contributed generously and the proceeds were donated to the Red Crescent Society.
Senior Students from Grades 10 and 11 were enlightened about the procedures of universities in the United Kingdom. Speakers from seven British universities were invited to Wesgreen to counsel our students on the respective requirements for admissions to their universities. Presentations were made, catalogues were distributed and questions were answered. This is an ongoing event which was initiated last year and will continue throughout the year for the benefit of our students. This will assist them, greatly, in finding universities and choices that are available. Students will also be taken to local universities as part of the School’s Counseling Programme.

Our students in the Primary Section have been receiving weekly certificates for outstanding academic effort. These certificates are distributed at their weekly assembly, as an incentive, to perform to their optimum level. Skits are produced by each class on a rotational basis, from grades one to four. A few themes, which have already been held, were based on importance of play scripts, friendship and poems.

The Boys and Girls Sections have seen an increase in House Competition activities during break. Tug-of-War, Basketball and Cricket matches have been held and the students will be preparing for their Sports Day in February 2005.

I would like to remind all parents all gates will close at 8:15am which is actually a fifteen minutes grace period. This grace period will gradually be phased out, as classes commence at 8:00am I stress that all need to be punctual and set an example which is hard to do if we are not good role models ourselves. All students should arrive at least ten minutes prior to school starting. As we start our day with a daily line up, it is important that all students are here to listen to important announcements that are to be made, or directions that are given for a particular day. School in the Primary Section concludes at 2:20pm and in the Senior Sections at 2:35pm. After school activities finish at 3:30pm. In spite of this, students are not collected on time and are left in school till after 4:00pm. This is most unfortunate and highly negligent on the part of some parents. Our staff member’s duty ends at 3:30pm after which the school cannot take any responsibility.

By now, you must have received my circulars about wearing the correct and full school uniform. The school uniform represents the school and it is imperative that the uniform should be worn with pride, integrity and at all times, in its entirety. Unless students are instructed otherwise, whenever coming to school they must wear the full school uniform.

Once again, with your continued support and cooperation we, at Wesgreen, will be able to make this learning experience, an enlightening and enriching experience for our students.

I take this opportunity to share with you this list of wishes for our children.

That you seek your happiness not so much at the finish line, as in the running; That you gain the strength not to lift tremendous weights, but one fallen friend; That you learn to fight your own battles with a never-ending string of temporary cease-fires; Not that the occasion make you smile, but that your smile make the occasion; That your bridges be built not over rivers, but over misunderstandings; That your wealth be not in your bank, but in your heart; That you win power not over others, but over yourself; That you bow not to little people with big titles, but to big people with little titles; That your name be a household word not throughout the land, but in your own household; That your monument be found not in public parks, but in the lives of those you’ve touched.
