Punctuations to count in GCSE exams

Candidates will be tested on the rules of written English in revamped exams being drawn up by curriculum chiefs. GCSE pupils in the UK will be denied good grades in English if their punctuation is poor, it emerged on Friday. To earn a C grade or above pupils will have to pass a new ‘functional skills’ test. They will have to show they can ‘punctuate accurately using commas, apostrophes and inverted commas’. Currently, examiners are given latitude in deciding whether to penalize youngsters for punctuation errors. They are supposed to pick up on mistakes but, in practice, usually turn a blind eye. Employers complain that they are forced to spend billions of remedial lessons for recruits who lack basis literacy and numeracy. They say these skills should be picked up at school. The war on the ‘greengrocer’s apostrophe’ emerged in draft proposals for new look English and maths GCSE exams issued by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. Shopkeepers are now to advertise the sale of ‘apple’s’ and ‘pear’s’ in defiance of the general rule that plural nouns should not take an apostrophe. This common slip was highlighted by Lynne Truss’s bestseller on the misuse of English grammar, Eats, Shoots and Leaves. On Friday, she declared herself “very happy’ with the reforms. The revamped GCSEs will be piloted later this year. If judged successful they will be extended across the country by 2009. The shake-up was demanded by ministers last year in response to the complaints from employers.

At Wesgreen International School we not only look at a child's punctuation and spelling but also presentation. Do remember, we are constantly striving to raise our standards.
