BASKETBALL
Grades 5 – 7
Basketball is one of the group games. Although skills are very important team work is more so. The sport born in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA in 1891, the inventor of the game Mr. Naismith was faced with the problem of finding a sport that was suitable for indoors during the Massachusetts winter for the students at the School for Christian Workers.
Rules:
- Each team must have 5 players in the court to start the game.
- Players in the same team must wear the same color.
- Player must carry a number on his back and a small number on his chest.
- The team late by 15mins or more to the game is concederd a loser.
- Scored shots out of the three points curve is counted as 3 points.
- Scored shots inside the three points curve counted as 2 points.
- Free shot counts with one point.
Skills:
- Basketball skills are: hold the ball, dribbling, passing, running with the ball, shooting and rebound.
- Dribbling is three kinds: -
- High dribble which is used when an opposing is away from the one who has the ball.
- Moderate dribble which is used when an opposing is close to the one who has the ball (About 3 meters away).
- Low dribble which is used when opposing is very close to the one who has the ball.
- Passing should be in the chest level.
- Arms are straight when player wants to catch the ball, at the time player catches the ball he pulls it to his chest to increase the power of the pass and to protect it.
- To shoot, the player should make his arms flexible and use his wrist and fingers to follow the ball till it leaves his hand.
- Ball flipping backward while shooting will bounce of the ring, and then towards it again because of the flip.
