PRIMARY DEPARTMENT

The Primary Section of Wesgreen International School caters for children from KG2 (Reception) through to Grade 6. It is during this important and vital phase of education that the foundations for further learning are laid and basic numeracy and literacy established.

The Primary Section is divided into two main sections - Key Stage 1 & Key Stage 2. Key Stage 1 consists of KG2 through to Grade 2. In these important years the basics in reading, writing and maths are established. The general emphasis in Key Stage 1 is on conceptual development, with pupils becoming competent in a wide range of skills and developing their ability in basic literacy and numeracy. Whilst some formal work takes place, the general emphasis is on working together and experiencing a rich curriculum first hand, which motivates and excites young minds.

This style of curriculum continues through to Key Stage 2, though there is an increased emphasis on formal academic work - largely through the books the children receive in their "book packs". There are also regular tests and assessment periods throughout this phase of learning thus preparing the pupils for the rigours of study at Secondary level and eventually IGCSE and post 16 provision.

  The Curriculum
A curriculum has been devised which combines the benefits of The British Curriculum and the new literacy and numeracy strategies recently introduced in the United Kingdom. At the same time, the traditional Arabic and Islamic studies offered maintain the links with life in a Muslim society. All children study Arabic in the Primary Department and there are separate classes for both Arabs and non Arabs.

The following class by class matrix gives an idea of the yearly breakdown of topics themes and skills taught during the Primary phase. However, it must be pointed out that the curriculum is ever changing and we are constantly looking for ways to improve and refine what is taught. Throughout the whole process of learning, the emphasis is not only on absorbing facts but more importantly, developing a wide range of skills, abilities and concepts which are interchangeable and help lay the foundations of critical thinking minds.

Although some subject specialism exists during the primary phase (Arabic, Islamic Studies, French or Urdu, I.T. and Music) the class teacher remains the most important person in the lives of pupils and they form an ‘important’ and vital link between school and parents.
