Introduction

Ultimate Frisbee is a relatively new game that was developed in America. It combines rules from soccer, basketball and netball and is played with a flat disc called a Frisbee.

Techniques of throwing

1. The Backhand

Power top backhandPower bottom backhand

This type of throw is the most natural way to throw the Frisbee.

Grip:

  • The Frisbee is gripped with the thumb on top of the Frisbee (the top is the rounded side)
  • The pointer finger is placed inside the rim on the underside of the Frisbee with the other fingers either spread out on the bottom or curled under the rim as well.

Preparation:

  • Stand side on with your non throwing shoulder pointing in the direction you are going to throw.
  • Bring your arm across your body so that the Frisbee is tucked into the top of your tummy.

Release:

  • Step forward with your front leg and whip your arm out while releasing the disk level with the person you’re throwing to.
  • Make sure to follow through and keep the Frisbee flying flat in the air.

2. The Forehand

This technique not as natural as the backhand however it provides a good throwing option for getting around a defending player.

Grip:

  • Take the first two fingers on your dominant hand and place them next to each other. Put them on the inside rim of the Frisbee
  • Your smallest two fingers are outside the rim. Place your thumb on the top of the Frisbee.

The Preparation:

  • On this throw, the foot placement and movement is important. You want to have your forearm at a 90 degree angle to your body, but straight out from your side.
  • Step with your dominant leg straight out, and then release.

Release

  • If you keep your hand stationary, your wrist has to flex back.
  • Once this has happened you snap it forward and release. This throw just takes practice

Techniques of Catching

Clap Catch

Pancake Grab

- One hand is on top of the disk, and one hand is on the bottom of the disk.

  • For right handers, it will probably be most comfortable with the right hand underneath and the left one on top. Left handers may be the opposite.

  • For frisbees over your head, it can be more reliable than the one handed catch.
  • When you catch the disk, you have better hand position for the quick throw.

Rules

  1. The Field -- A rectangular shape with end zones at each end. A regulation field is 64m by 37 metres, with end zones 23 metres deep.
  2. Initiate Play -- Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective end zone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven players per team.
  3. Scoring -- Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's end zone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score.
  4. Movement of the Disc -- The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count.
  5. Change of possession -- When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.
  6. Substitutions -- Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout.
  7. Non-contact -- No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.
  8. Fouls -- When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.
  9. Self-Refereeing -- Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.
  10. Spirit of the Game -- Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.

Cut to the Frisbee

  • Cutting should be done to the side to find a gap away from a defender.
  • As well as running to the side you also want to run towards the thrower, so that they can try to put the disk in your chest. See the diagram below.
