Kindergarten 1
EARLY YEARS AT WESGREEN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
Given an environment in which they can thrive and in which they can take pleasure, young children can become competent learners and skilful communicators, with a strong sense of self and belonging. Three of the key elements of the Foundation Stage are exploration, investigation and experimentation and our ‘learning through play’ philosophy in the Early Years of Wesgreen International School can prove very effective for our students.
The partnership between school and home is a very important one. Children learn successfully when teachers carefully plan structured activities which build on their previous knowledge and experience. At Wesgreen International School, teaching and learning in the Foundation Stage is often topic based and cross curricular rather than being organised into different subjects as they are later on in your child’s school life, but aims to cover the learning goals in six main areas of development, each area as important as another.
- Communication, Language and Literacy
- Mathematical Development
- Physical Development
- Creative Development
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World (which may be later compartmentalised into History, Geography, Science, and Information and Communication Technology)
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
- Arabic
- Islamic
Any single activity has the capacity to encompass more than one developmental area. The children of KG1 experience activities, including many aspects of Mathematical Development and Communication, Language and Literacy, including an introduction to phonics, which children enjoy as play, but come to recognise as purposeful and useful learning and which can be further built on as they progress to KG2.
Your child’s diary is an essential form of communication between home and school, giving all kinds of information, including that of the phonic being introduced in a particular week, for children of KG1 and, in KG2, a summary of the Literacy, Numeracy and Science topics during the week. Assessment is carried out on a continual basis.
